Over the past few years, mobile tyre fitting vans have become a familiar sight on Bradford’s streets. It’s easy to see the appeal — someone comes to you, fits your tyres on the driveway, and you never have to take time out of your day to visit a garage. But is mobile fitting always the right choice? As a workshop that has been fitting tyres since 2004, we think there are scenarios where each approach makes sense — and situations where one clearly wins.
When Mobile Tyre Fitting Makes Sense
There are genuine situations where mobile fitting is the practical answer. If you have a flat tyre and the vehicle is immobile, a mobile fitter can come to you rather than requiring a tow truck. Similarly, if you have a puncture at home and can’t safely drive to a garage, calling out a mobile service is a perfectly sensible solution.
Mobile fitting is also convenient for people with very limited time who can’t afford to wait even 30 minutes at a workshop. If you can schedule the van to come while you work from home, for example, that’s a reasonable trade-off.
The Limitations of Mobile Fitting
Here’s where things get more nuanced. Mobile tyre fitters carry a limited stock — typically the most popular sizes in budget brands. If your vehicle runs an unusual size, or you want a specific premium brand, the mobile van may not have what you need. You may end up with a tyre you didn’t want simply because it was the only one on the van.
The other significant limitation is balancing. A proper wheel balance requires a dynamic balancing machine — most mobile vans carry a portable version, but portable balancers are not as accurate as the workshop equipment used by a fixed garage. An improperly balanced wheel will vibrate at speed and wear your new tyre unevenly, which is a false economy.
Other limitations worth knowing:
- No wheel alignment check — mobile fitters cannot check or adjust your wheel alignment, which should ideally be checked whenever new tyres are fitted
- Weather dependent — working outdoors on a wet Bradford day is not ideal for either the fitter or the job quality
- Alloy wheel risk — fitting on the roadside without a proper tyre machine mount increases the risk of kerb rash on your alloys
- Old tyre disposal — some mobile operators leave old tyres with the customer, which then need to be disposed of responsibly
- TPMS sensor handling — tyre pressure monitoring sensors can be damaged if not handled correctly during fitting; workshop equipment reduces this risk

TPMS Sensors: An Important Consideration
Most cars registered after 2014 are fitted with Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors inside each wheel. These small electronic sensors measure tyre pressure and alert you via the dashboard if a tyre loses pressure significantly. When tyres are changed, TPMS sensors need to be carefully removed, checked, and refitted — and in some cases, the system needs to be reset or relearned via a diagnostic tool.
Broken TPMS sensors are one of the most common complaints following tyre fitting by operators without the right equipment. At Pro Flo we check and reset TPMS as part of our standard fitting process, so your dashboard warning light doesn’t come on after we’re done.
Cost Comparison
Mobile fitting often adds a call-out charge on top of the tyre price, which can make the total cost comparable to or higher than workshop fitting. When you factor in the cost of getting alignment checked separately (which you should do), workshop fitting frequently works out cheaper overall. Our Recommendation
Use mobile fitting when you genuinely can’t move the vehicle, or convenience is your absolute priority. Use workshop fitting for everything else — particularly when fitting multiple tyres, when you have alloy wheels, when TPMS sensors need attention, or when you want alignment checked at the same time.
