Part worn tyres are a significant part of the tyre market in Bradford and across the UK. For drivers on tight budgets, they offer a genuine saving over new tyres. But the part worn market has a well-documented problem: a 2014 investigation by TyreSafe found that 1 in 3 part worn tyres tested failed to meet legal standards. That statistic is a reason to be choosy about where you buy — not a reason to avoid part worns altogether. Here’s what the law says, and what we do at Pro Flo to ensure every part worn we sell is genuinely safe.
What UK Law Actually Requires
The sale of part worn tyres in the UK is governed by The Motor Vehicles (Tyres) (Safety) Regulations 1994, made under the Road Traffic Act 1988. The requirements for sellers of part worn tyres are specific:
- Minimum tread depth of 2mm across the full width of the tread pattern and around the entire circumference, at the point of sale
- The words “PART WORN” must be permanently marked on the tyre in letters at least 4mm high
- The tyre must be free from cuts, lumps, or bulges in the sidewall
- The bead (the part that seals against the wheel rim) must be intact
- No internal damage, and the structural integrity of the carcass must be maintained
- If the tyre has been repaired, the repair must comply with British Standard BS AU 159
These are the minimums. A legally compliant part worn tyre can be sold with just over 2mm of tread, which means it could reach the UK’s 1.6mm legal minimum very quickly in service — potentially in just a few thousand miles of normal driving.
What Pro Flo Does Before Any Part Worn Goes on Sale
We apply stricter standards than the legal minimum. Every tyre we consider for part worn sale goes through the following checks at our Canal Road workshop:
- Tread depth: We require a minimum of 3mm of tread depth, measured across the central 75% of the tread width. This gives customers meaningful usable life, not just a legal minimum that will be consumed rapidly.
- Sidewall inspection: We examine both sidewalls visually and by hand for cuts, bulges, embedded debris, and UV degradation. Any tyre with sidewall damage or suspicious bulging is rejected.
- Internal inspection: We check inside the tyre where possible for cord damage, previous puncture repairs, and signs of overloading or impact damage that may not be visible from outside.
- Age check: Every tyre has a DOT code showing its manufacture date (the last four digits indicate week and year). We do not sell tyres over six years old, regardless of tread depth, because tyre compounds degrade with age even when not in use.
- Uniformity: We check that the tyre hasn’t developed uneven wear patterns that would indicate a history of alignment issues or improper inflation.

The cost saving on part worn versus new tyres varies considerably by size and brand. For a common size like 205/55 R16, a quality part worn might cost £25–£40 fitted, compared to £50–£80 for a budget new tyre and £100–£150 for a mid-range new tyre. For someone who needs to replace one or two tyres on a budget, part worns represent a genuine saving.
The important caveat is value for money over time. A part worn with 4mm of tread starting life will give fewer miles before replacement than a new tyre. For high-mileage drivers, the economics often favour new mid-range tyres. For low-mileage urban drivers or those in a temporary financial situation, part worns can be a perfectly sensible choice.
Who Should Buy Part Worn Tyres?
Part worn tyres are a sensible option for:
- Drivers covering low annual mileage (under 8,000–10,000 miles)
- People who need a quick, affordable solution to pass an upcoming MOT
- Those running a second car or spare vehicle that sees light use
- Anyone managing a genuine budget constraint who drives primarily in urban conditions
They’re less suitable for high-mileage drivers, motorway commuters, or anyone who wants the maximum wet-weather performance the market can provide. In those cases, we’ll recommend new mid-range tyres and explain the cost-per-mile comparison honestly.
