Car Air Conditioning Not Working? Common Causes & Fixes

September 2025 Maintenance 5 min read

Few things are more frustrating on a hot summer day — or a cold damp winter morning — than an air conditioning system that isn't working properly. Whether your car's aircon is blowing warm air, has no airflow at all, or smells musty when switched on, there's usually a diagnosable cause.

At Pro Flo Exhausts & Tyres in Bradford, we service and regas air conditioning systems on all makes and models. Here are the most common reasons aircon fails, and what we can do about it.

1. Low Refrigerant (Most Common)

The most frequent cause of an aircon system that blows warm air is simply low refrigerant. Air conditioning systems lose roughly 10–15% of their refrigerant each year through normal permeation of seals and hoses, even with no visible leak. After 2–3 years, this can cause a noticeable drop in cooling performance.

The fix is an air conditioning regas, which involves recovering any remaining refrigerant, pulling a vacuum on the system to remove moisture, then refilling to the exact manufacturer-specified amount.

Modern cars use either R134a or the newer R1234yf refrigerant (check your vehicle handbook or the label under the bonnet). We handle both at Pro Flo. A regas typically costs from £55 and takes around 45 minutes.

2. Refrigerant Leak

If your system loses refrigerant quickly after a regas, there's likely a leak somewhere in the circuit. Common leak points include:

We can test for leaks using UV dye or an electronic leak detector. Fixing a leak before regassing saves money in the long run — there's no point topping up refrigerant into a leaking system.

3. Faulty Compressor

The compressor is the heart of the air conditioning system — it pressurises the refrigerant to drive the cooling cycle. If the compressor fails, the system won't cool at all. Signs of compressor failure include:

Compressor replacement is a more significant repair. We'll advise you honestly on whether it's economical to repair relative to the vehicle's value.

4. Blocked or Dirty Cabin Filter

The cabin air filter (also called a pollen filter) cleans the air before it enters the cabin. A severely blocked filter restricts airflow through the vents, which can make the system feel like it's not working — even if the refrigerant charge is fine. Cabin filters should typically be replaced every 12–15,000 miles or 12 months. It's a quick and inexpensive fix.

5. Electrical Fault

Air conditioning systems rely on several sensors, switches, relays, and control modules. If any of these fail, the system may not engage at all. Common electrical causes include:

6. Musty or Unpleasant Smells

If the aircon works but smells bad when first switched on, the evaporator — which removes humidity from the air — has accumulated bacteria and mould. This is common if the system isn't used regularly.

We can treat this with an antibacterial evaporator cleaner, which kills bacteria and neutralises odours. We also recommend running the aircon regularly year-round (even in winter) to keep moisture from building up.

Pro tip: Switch off the aircon 2–3 minutes before your journey ends but leave the fan running. This allows the evaporator to dry out, significantly reducing mould and bacteria build-up.
